NextEra Energy shares soared to new highs in 2018, and company Chairman and Chief Executive James Robo once again was the most handsomely rewarded boss in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.

Reflecting NextEra's status as the most valuable utility in the nation, Robo also was the top-paid utility executive in the country last year, according to Palm Beach Post research.

Robo collected $37.9 million in 2018, up from $32.6 million in 2017, NextEra told securities regulators.

Robo's pay included a $1.4 million salary and a $4.5 million incentive plan payment.

But the big prize came from stock wealth. Through stock vesting, Robo took ownership of 123,699 shares of NextEra (NYSE: NEE) worth $22 million.

And he exercised options on 81,489 shares of NextEra for a gain of $8.6 million.
